First up tonight was Mandisa, the woman that Simon ridiculed for her weight. She belted out an excellent version of a Heart rock song. I think she will make it through to the final six girls. She deserves to, anyway. She not only has a great voice and stage presence, but a killer personality. She got great reviews from all three judges.
Second, Kelly Pickler sang a Martina McBride song and I thought she did a great job. For those who think her post-song intervew was a little too corny to be for real, I am originally from Charlotte, which is not so far from Albemarle where she is from, and I know plenty of people that corny (including myself at times). I am not saying that I know she is 100 percent for real, but I think she probably isn't far off. Is she playing up the cute, Southern bell card? She'd be crazy not to.
Becky O'Donohue (I call her the female Elvis lookalike) was up third and sang a song that I love, "Because the Night" and was only okay. She got a decent review from Randy, but Paula and Simon both said "not good enough."
Fourth was the basketball player, Ayla Brown, singing a song from Mulan. She sounded really good. The judges were pleasantly surprised that she did such a good job. Being an athlete has to be an advantage because athletes are used to coming through under pressure when it really matters.
Next up was another one of my favorites, Paris Bennett, singing one of my all time favorite songs, "Midnight Train to Georgia." The vocals were good, but what impressed me the most was her energy, although at times she seemed almost a little too perky. Randy was blown away. Paula was too, and called her a little firecracker. Simon loved her confidence and said she was great.
9:15 -- I got distracted by the phone and kids, and missed a few, but heard Heather Cox sing. I agree with the judges that it was not memorable. Lisa Tucker is up next and if she is anything like she has been, she will be awesome.
9:36 -- Melissa McGhee just sang for the first time on television. She made it to the final 24 without ever having been shown singing on the show. That really shows how much the choice of clips used manipulates the audience. Kelly Pickler, Lisa Tucker, Paris Bennett and several of the others have been shown multiple times, both singing and in mini-profiles produced by American Idol. Melissa, who has a really interesting and unique voice, has only her one short song tonight to make an impression on the audience and convince them to vote for her. That is enough to make me want to vote for her. It will be interesting to see how she does.
Lisa Tucker just sang. She did excellent, as expected, as always. I think she will do great on American Idol, but even if she doesn't, she should be a huge star and have a great career. She is drop dead gorgeous with an incredibly strong voice, and she has her entire life ahead of her.
9:46 -- After hearing Kinnik Sky sing, I can say that I hold to my early choices. Here are my bets for five of the top six: Kelly Pickler, Lisa Tucker, Paris Bennett, Mandisa, Katherine McPhee (in spite of her love for Barbara Streisand). I think I would love to see Melissa make it too, just because she has an unusual voice and has not been given a shot to speak to the audience until now.
